Football, Rain and Eating Out

The summer of 2010 was a time when we were eagerly awaiting a well overdue heatwave, preparing for world cup glory and no doubt expecting a thriving few months for the hospitality industry… Unfortunately, on all three counts, we were wrong. For the hospitality industry in particular, the summer months failed to live up to expectations, and like a bad recurring dream we find ourselves once again in the midst of some dismal weather, poor displays from the England football team, and tough times for restaurants and pubs. A recent study suggests frequency of eating out has hit its lowest level in the UK since the summer of 2010 – a bit of a blow for those hoping that the worst was behind us – but is there light at the end of the tunnel? The savvy landlord or restauranteur should be thinking about ways to entice diners in both the short and the long term, not just relying on the boost Christmas will bring. Incentives for return trips in the new year, like a 10% discount or a free pudding, could really help to turn things around and give you a head start in the new year. Meal deals outside peak hours, particularly early evenings (4pm-5pm) could also entice extra customers through the door, and with a welcome smile and good food and service, who knows, they may stay for the evening.
