According to a recent survey by the Mystery Dining Company the two most important factors when choosing a pub are quality food and a good atmosphere. So what is it about that great British pub atmosphere and why are customers so keen to experience it? A pub is different to a restaurant and it is an integral part of British tradition, coming with a number of expectations when we step inside. A restaurant can be many things - small and cosy, sleek and modern, bright and cheerful - but a pub, well a pub must be welcoming and friendly. Sally Whelan, of the Mystery Dining Company, said: "The fact friendliness rated so highly when asking what element makes a great pub really does speak volumes." There are a number of ways in which this can be achieved and a good place to start is the staff. It is important that they understand the role they play in creating an atmosphere and the best pubs have employees who enjoy working there. Making sure they are well trained and motivated will help with this and encouraging them to talk to customers when the bar is quiet will help to portray a friendly feeling. Those managing pubs must think about the type of customers they are attracting, as this will affect the overall atmosphere. The volume and type of music being played, the selection of products on offer and their price and even the decor will all send out a message to potential customers. Friendly clientele will attract others with the same temperament and most people can feel it from the minute they walk through the door. Ms Whelan said: " Pubs , perhaps even more so than restaurants, are about the overall customer experience; that is often a combination of being made to feel welcome as well as feeling as though food and beverages are of a fitting quality, either meeting or defying expectations."
