Breakfast with the Lions?

Barbecue

This summer is a significant one for sports fans, with competition taking on an Antipodean flavour this year.

The British and Irish Lions embark on the first of three tests on consecutive Saturdays against Australia on the 22nd of June. Then, no sooner have the Lions returned from their Wallaby hunt, Australia's cricketers touch down on English soil for the five-test Ashes series against England.

And of course there's the Tour de France, Wimbledon, the British Grand Prix and more.

So there are opportunities aplenty for establishments to cash in on the summer of sport. Here are a couple of suggestions:

Scrum-tious Breakfast: The time difference between the UK and Australia might make benefitting from the Lions tour seem difficult for publicans, however, as long as you have all the correct licencing in place, there are opportunities. With all the matches on pay TV, many rugby fans will be looking for venues to watch the Lions tests. Consider getting a licence extension to cover those early morning kick-offs and run breakfast deals, with offers on lighter "session" beers as well as non-alcoholic beverages.

Ashes BBQ: The Ashes test series will take place generally from Thursday to Monday throughout July and August. The matches will start around 11am and finish around 7pm - so there will be opportunities to entice customers for long visits and a bite to eat.

Murray mint: I know we say this every year, but one genuine hope of British sporting success this summer will be attracting the crowds to SW19. For fair-weather tennis fans who can't make it to Wimbledon however, the chance to soak up the atmosphere at a themed pub event, with strawberries and cream, pimms and cream teas, might be just the ticket.
